OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – On Sunday, October 25, Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) accepted the endorsements of the Oklahoma Education Association (OEA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) – Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma City AFT. Local educators joined Congresswoman Horn for a short press conference and then participated in an Educators Day of Action to knock doors for the campaign. Video of the press conference is available here.
“I am so honored to receive the endorsements of OEA, AFT Oklahoma, and OKC-AFT,” said Congresswoman Kendra Horn. “Education is the most important investment we can make in our future. It’s in an investment in our children, in our families, and in our communities. I’m proud to be the product of public schools, and I will always be a champion for public education. In Congress, I’ve fought to make sure public dollars go to public schools, I’ve secured record funding for programs like Head Start, and I’ve introduced legislation to provide hazard pay to the teachers and educators on the frontlines of COVID-19. I’m proud to be recognized by Oklahoma’s educators for my pro-public education record.”
“Congresswoman Horn understands educators and public education issues,” said OEA President Alicia Priest. “She has successfully pushed legislation that benefits Oklahoma students. She meets with teachers at every opportunity and includes them in legislative decisions that affect their profession. Kendra Horn is a true champion of public education.”
“In 2O18, in record numbers, teachers voted to elect Congresswoman Kendra Horn to represent CD 5 because we knew she was a true champion for public education and a strong supporter of teachers,” said OKC-AFT President Torie Shoecraft. “She has spoken out against Betsy Devos’ attempts to divert stimulus funding for public schools to private schools. And most recently, Congresswoman Horn introduced the “Educators are Heroes Act,” which would offer teachers hazard pay during this pandemic. In 2O2O, we are voting to re-elect Congresswoman Horn because she has not stopped fighting for teachers. I am proud to endorse Congresswoman Kendra Horn on behalf of the Oklahoma City and Oklahoma American Federation of Teachers.”
During her first term in the House, Congresswoman Kendra Horn has made education a top priority by fighting to keep public dollars in public schools, working to deliver stimulus relief for schools and for college students, securing record funding for Head Start and special education, and by introducing her own legislation to provide hazard pay to teachers on the front lines during the pandemic. Congresswoman Horn has also passed legislation to stop Education Sec. Betsy Devos from cutting $1 million in school funding for Oklahoma.
